Crown of thorns is a hardy perennial with stout gray thorns and oval leaves that drop as they age. The sprawling, branching, vinelike stems can attain lengths of more than two metres (seven feet), though potted plants are considerably smaller. The small inconspicuous flowers are borne in paired clusters and are surrounded by two showy light red bracts. It is a plant that grows in tropical climates. It is also known as the thorny acacia. Various forms are available with yellow or deep red bracts. The white milky sap is poisonous and can cause skin and eye irritation. The crown of the thorns plant produces fruit containing seeds that are eaten by animals such as birds, bats, lizards and rodents.
1. These plants have been used for centuries as antiseptics, painkillers, disinfectants, and tonics.
2. The latex of some crown of thorn species has been used for arrow poisons and to stupefy fish for capture.
3. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended the usage of Euphorbia milii in aiding snail control.
4. Extracts from the plant are used to control the snail population to avoid getting infected from a parasite.
5. The plant itself has proven to be an effective molluscicide and a natural alternative to pest control.
