Samanea saman(Rain Tree) is a species of flowering tree in the pea family,and is native to Central and South America. It is well represented in many languages and has numerous local names in its native range; common English names include saman, rain tree and monkeypod tree.The tree is grown to provide shade for other crops, including cocoa, coffee, tea and peppers.The long black pods and the leaves are rich in tannins and they are relished for livestock fodder.

TREE DESCRIPTION:

Saman is a wide-canopied tree with a large symmetrical umbrella-shaped crown. It usually reaches a height of 15–25 m (49–82 ft) and a diameter of 30 m (98 ft).The leaves fold in rainy weather and in the evenings, hence the names rain tree and five o'clock tree.The tree has pinkish flowers with white and red stamens, set on heads with around 12–25 flowers per head. These heads may number in the thousands, covering the whole tree.Samanea produces copious pods with a sweet pulp, attractive to children and animals alike.

USES:

1. Medicinally, the plant is used in the treatment of diarrhea, stomach pain, and sore throat.
2. Rain Tree wood used to make common wood furniture, for mosaic, carving handicrafts for tourists.
3. A brew of small sections of the bark is taken to treat stomach-ache.
4. The seeds are chewed for treating a sore throat.
5. The fruit decoction is used as a CNS(Central Nervous System)-sedative when we suffer from insomnia,anxiety and panic attacks.
